Ellis Island

Johannes
Ellis Island
Standing at the turnstiles, queuing in a line
Waiting for enlistees to check your passport.
All your hopes and dreams put in the paper that you sign
Sympathies have been cut short.
You're waiting here for hours, when minutes turn to years
The queue is only slowly getting started.
From a far you see rejections, they magnify your fears
You see most refugees leave broken-hearted.
I see your heart break at Ellis Island
Haunted by the ghosts, of disease and decay
I see your heart break at Ellis Island
And the Promised Land was just some yards away.
On that sunny day
The Times when you were needed have long time gone
The mood within the country is a-changin'
Pure desperation is the force that drives you on
But at no point you were ever found complaining.
Now they tell you to return to your ship and sail back home
They tell you that your claim has been rejected
They're in no need of poor immigrants and finally they own
That they didn't want the country to be defected.
I see your heart break at Ellis Island
Haunted by the ghosts, of disease and decay
I see your heart break at Ellis Island
And the Promised Land was just some yards away.
On that sunny day
You're a mother of four children, three daughters and a son
They have come here, standing hand in hand beside you
You're husbands not with you, he is off for World War I
Fighting at the sharp end, trying to get through.
You glance out of the window of the crowded waiting room
See Miss Liberty unmasked as liar
You know that sailing back means sailing right into your doom
Back to a country that's been set on fire.
And I see your tears fall at Ellis Island
As you grab your children's hands and smile at them
One day you might return to Ellis Island
But it's a journey towards uncertainty til then.
God knows when.
